  • 05-06-07 Mustangs, what to look for

Wife and I have been talking, and we are thinking of trying to trade the Vette for a 05-06-07 Mustang, preferably a V8 GT model. The Vette is not practical with the grandson, so it sits more than it gets driven anymore. If we don't have a sitter, we have to take two cars to any cruise ins or shows we go to. The Mustang looks like it will fit the bill nicely, room for a car seat in back, and still be stylish. We went and looked at a 06 GT yesterday, I loved it, but the dealer said he was trying to sell out so it was cash only, no trades. Been doing a little research on them, seems like the 05's have gauge problems, and fueling problems as well. The V6 wasn't rated too highly by many folks, either. Really, I can't see getting one with anything but the V8, a 6 in a Stang just seems lame. After all, a Mustang is a performance car, right?

Anything to watch out for? I figure anything we can afford is going to be in the over 100,000 miles category, it's not going to be a daily driver, so that's not a big deal. Not worried so much about normal maintenance items, more so the quirky problems like dash clusters, leaks, fueling problems, trans problems, etc. Tech guys and owners feel free to chime in....

I don't have one but can tell you as a Ford tech, we don't see very many '05-'09 Mustangs in the shop. Not sure if it's because they are getting older, or if it's just because they don't have any major issues.
I'm thinking if you can find a decent low mileage one, check it out well, you probably can't miss.

Bobby I have no experience with any of these Mustangs. I'm probably wrong, but I love the hood scoop on this style, and I THINK .... the 2005 GT has the scoop and somewhere along the line the hood of the later Mustangs got a short cowl induction ALA Chevys ....
I'd want a PONY with a hood scoop.

That's the kinda thing I want to hear, not many problems with them! I know the 4.6 will easily go over 200,000 miles, the 4.0 I'm not so sure.

I agree, I love the GT scoop! Some are even the Shaker scoops! Saw one over in Atlanta, beautiful car, price was right. Wife called about it, got to talking to the guy, darn thing had over 300,000 miles on it, 150,000 miles on just the engine. Made me sick, it was exactly what I wanted. Not in a hurry though, it may take a year for the right one to come along......

Just a heads up, if you see 2005 and later Mustang with a shaker hood, it's an aftermarket set up made by CDC (Classic Design Concepts).
Ford got out of the shaker business after the 2003-2004 Mach 1 run.
They look pretty cool when done right, but Ford had nothing to do with those.

Didn't know that! One I was looking at had the Shaker, it looked factory, well done conversion I guess. It had over 300,000 miles on it though, supposedly 150,000 on the engine, so I passed on it. It was exactly set up like I want, but just too many miles. They didn't know about the trans [automatic] and rears, so they may have been original or not. Not willing to take that big a chance....

That is nice! But about twice as much money as I think I can get out of the Vette.

Yea, I knew it was high for an '05, don't see em like that everyday. Probably too nice to be a daily driver also.

Whatever I get will be mostly a weekend car. Wife has her Expy, my pickup sits since I'm in the semi most of the time. acording to the prices I'm seeing around here that is a steal. They want that for one with 100,000 miles around here.

The exterior red is ok, but I cannot handle the red interior.
Some of the worst interiors Ford ever put in Mustangs were those hideous "porno red" interiors of the Fox body Mustangs!!

I prefer blue or black myself. Red is ok. Don't want sliver or green though. I really like the yellow, not so much the orange, its too pale.
