  • Daily driver '07 Taurus died this morning

Everything up to the point of failure was fine. As I pulled into the access road at work I momentarily stopped to allow cross traffic to pass. As I stepped on the gas I briefly accelerated and then I heard and felt a 'clunk'. Noticed the engine was revving. Discovered the transmission was not putting power to the wheels. Coasted to a stop in a parking space. Found PARK with engine running. Moved gear selector into REVERSE and all forward gears. Nothing. Turned off engine. Waited a few moments. Repeat. Nothing. I topped off the trans fluid level a month ago. Nothing seemed amiss (i.e. color, odor). Trans has never been worked on and has 183k miles. A quick search indicates this is an issue for the Taurus. I may be able to get the trans to work by disconnecting the battery and allowing the PCM to search for codes. Suggestions?

You broke it. By it going clunk, I'd say mechanical failure of some kind, maybe lost a CV joint. Did it make any noise when you were sitting still?
Probably time to call your favorite shop I'm sad to say.

The 'clunk' wasn't real loud and there wasnt any noise after that (i.e. half shaft banging around, grinding), just the sound of the engine running. Im headed out at lunchtime to determine what to do next. Might be a 'for sale' sign in it shortly.

Friend of mine had a 80's Escort that did the same thing, suddenly stopped moving, no noises. Hers was a CV joint that popped out of the splines enough that it lost connection, but didn't fall out enough to flop around. I think she had a $1 E clip put on to replace the one that broke that held the axle in. Labor was two or three hundred dollars though....

sounds to me like the input shaft on the transmission broke.

The Ford dealer I had it towed to called me yesterday and said it WASNT an electronic failure. I set a dollar amount limit so they wouldn't spend $500 to tell me its broken. Service writer said based on what I told him it sounded like a failed torque converter. Paid dealer $150. This morning I arranged for a flat tow to a transmission dealer. Paid driver $135. The transmission shop will call me next week once the get the transmission out and look into it. I asked the question: new transmission costs? $2400. Which is what I paid for a new transmission in my 219,xxx mile '86 Taurus in 1999-2000.

So will your 183K miles, ten year old Taurus get a $2500 transmission? I think I would suggest you start looking for a less expensive transmission.......

That, or another car. Unless it's something special or has a lots of memories in it, it's probably not worth sinking much into it. Nearly 200,000 miles, the value has to be pretty low, no matter how nice it is.
