(by the way, if you have jack stands like the ones they're using, throw them away. I had a set just like them try to kill me once.)

Whats wrong with those jack stands? Other than always being in between holes when you get under to put them in? I've got a pair of those, I don't use them much anymore since I got some with the ratchet style post. One of the ratchets broke on one of mine, the old pin style ones still work good. I don't extend them to the top though, I usually use the middle hole, they can be wobbly in the top hole.

It's the fact they're made of sheetmetal is the problem. When they fail it's almost instantaneous. I was working under a car and preoccupied with what I was doing and I happen to notice the floor board of the car seemed to be slowly lowering, I look over and see one of my jack stands folding up, so I scrambled out from under as fast as I could just in time for it to totally collapse and the car fell onto the ground. At almost the same time that summer a guy in the next town was killed when the same thing happened to him. I've been a fan of sturdy jack stands ever since.

Humm, I can see where that might happen. I don't use my two much anymore since I lost the pin in one of them, I usually just grab the three ratchet stands I have. Have 4, but the cast ratchet pawn broke on one of them so it's pretty useless now. About the only time I use the sheetmetal one is on my riding mower anymore. Never saw one collapse though, maybe it was overloaded? I know mine isn't rated for as much weight as my ratchet stands.

I'm trying to remember what the car I was working on, I think it was a Monza. I do know it was a car, I didn't often work on customer's trucks back then. It wasn't very old stands, I do remember the paint still looked new. A riding mower is a good use for them.
