Early C2OE timing cover for 289.

  • Early C2OE timing cover for 289.

    I have an early timing cover with an oil fill tube, and a new aluminum pump. I was told in order to fill with oil you had to notch the block? or the cover? I can't remember when and why if anyone has done this please help. Thanks in advance, Jason. (PS) It's a later style block C8OE.

    I rebuilt a 63 260 last year with an early cover and the block looked identical in the front.

      I use those.

      The notch in the timing cover for oil to go down is very small. It would take a long time to pour 5qts down that tube. I usually just pull the tube out and replace it with a freeze plug... just so it isn't in the way. Of course, if you don't mind it sticking up there, it's another breather, which can't be bad.

      If you want to use the tube as an oil fill, you might consider modifying things to allow the oil to pour in faster.
